How to Release Throat, Tongue and Jaw Tension when Singing and Balance Subglottal Pressure

Several times a week I will encounter a consultation with a prospective student and they will as me why it hurts after they sing. When I listen and watch them sing I must figure out where the tension is. Most of the time it is jaw, tongue, and throat muscle tension. A tight jaw causes tight neck mucles which can make singing feel like pushing a heavy door with your neck. The sound may still come out, but at a heavy price to your vocal health as the voice tires faster than it should.
Most throat, tongue and jaw tension in singing comes from a few common causes: too much laryngeal power, uneven breath pressure, tongue, neck, and jaw tension or the false vocal folds getting involved in the process of singing. The goal in singing is balancing the breath, the vocal folds, resonance, and articulation in harmony. Singing is natural. Young children sing without tension. Why did that change?
The causes of vocal tension can be many such as vocal overuse, unnatural pitch, acid reflux, illness to even stress. With any these things above you train your neuro-motor memory and that is called a habit. Habits are hard to break. If your singing causes pain, hoarseness, laryngitis, or a feeling of choking, you need to see a trained Singing Voice Specialist (SVS) / Vocologist as myself to help you correct all those bad habits.
Start by educating yourself
Singing uses the whole body,. The breath actually begins in the pelvic floor which moves the diaphragm into the lungs. The sound actually starts at the larynx. Inside the larynx are the true vocal folds, often called the real vocal cords. These are the small bands of muslce tissue that come together and vibrate when air from the lungs passes through them. That vibration creates the raw sound of the voice. Above them sit the false vocal folds, also called the vestibular folds. These do not usually vibrate in singing. Their main jobs are protective. They help close the airway when swallowing, assist with coughing, and can brace during heavy physical effort.
Some singing styles use false vocal fold activity on purpose, especially certain harsh, distorted, or extreme vocal sounds. That should be trained carefully, because accidental false fold squeezing can feel like throat tightness, burning, or a blocked tone. I do. not teach distortion because of the health of the singer's voice.
Step 1. Check for jaw tension before you sing
Jaw tension often hides in plain sight. A singer may think the throat is the problem, but the jaw is clamping down and pulling the tongue with it. That creates a chain reaction. The tongue root tightens, the larynx gets tugged, and the throat gets involved.
Try this before vocalizing:
Place two fingers gently on the jaw hinge, temproromanddibular joint, just in front of the ears.
Let the lips part slightly.
Let the lower jaw drop without pushing it down.
Breathe in quietly through the nose.
Hum a comfortable pitch on “mm,” then open to “mah.”
Notice whether the jaw locks, shifts, or snaps shut when the vowel begins. If it does, reduce the volume and range of motion. The jaw should move like a loose hinge, not a clamp. and the jaw never, ever moves side-to side!
A useful image is to let the upper jaw stays lifted while the lower jaw hangs. Many singers try to “open the mouth” by spreading or pushing. That can tighten the face. Instead, you should be allowing space. For quick release, massage the masseter muscle, the thick cheek muscle used for chewing. Use small circles along the back of the jaw. Then sing an easy five-note pattern on “yah-yah-yah” with a lazy, loose jaw. Do not exaggerate the mouth opening. Keep it speech-like.
Step 2. Release the tongue so the throat does less
The tongue has eight muscles that control it. Those muscles can pull directly on the muscles. ttendons, and ligaments around the larynx. When the tongue root stiffens, it can create the feeling of a lump in the throat. It can also make vowels sound swallowed.
Try this tongue reset:
Rest the tongue tip behind the lower front teeth.
Let the middle of the tongue soften forward.
Sing “ng” as in “sing” on a comfortable pitch.
Slide gently down a few notes.
Open from “ng” to “ah” without yanking the tongue back.
If “ah” feels tight, try “uh” or “aw” first. Some vowels invite less jaw and tongue gripping.
Another simple drill is to sing with the tongue resting slightly out over the lower lip. Use a quiet “ah” or “uh” on a short pattern. This is not for performance. It teaches the tongue root to stop pulling backward. If the tone becomes unclear, that is fine. The release matters more than beauty during the exercise.
Step 3. Balance subglottal pressure instead of pushing air
Subglottal pressure is the air pressure below the vocal folds. “Sub” means below, and “glottal” refers to the glottis, the space between the vocal folds. When breath pressure rises from the lungs, the vocal folds resist and vibrate. Good singing requires enough pressure to keep the folds vibrating, but not so much that the throat has to brace.
When subglottal pressure is too high, you may feel the need to hold the throat shut against the air. The tone may sound loud but pushed Higher frequency notes may spread, crack, or feel like a shout. The neck muscles may pop out. The jaw may tighten to “help.” All this tension is unnecessary and can be disasterous.
Common signs include:
A hard attack at the start of notes (glottal plosive)
Loudness that feels difficult to control
A pushed or yelled tone
Throat fatigue after short singing
A feeling that more effort is needed as you singer higher notes,
The fix is not to stop breathing. The fix is to not push so hard and allow cleaner vocal fold closure and. better resonance. Try a gentle “vvv” or “zzz” on one pitch. These sounds create steady airflow without letting all the air dump at once. Then sing the same pitch on a vowel, keeping the same easy buzz.
Low breath pressure can create a different problem. If the airflow is too weak, the vocal folds may not vibrate efficiently. The tone may be breathy, shaky, or flat. To compensate, singers often squeeze the throat muscles to get more sound. That squeezing may involve the false vocal folds, tongue root, or outer neck muscles, which is another problem.
Signs of too little pressure include:
A weak tone that disappears on longer phrases
Too much air leaking through the sound
Pitch sagging near the ends of phrases
A need to grip the throat to get volume
Running out of air quickly because the folds are not closing well
The solution is gentle energy, not force. Think of a steady stream, not a blast and not a leak.
A good drill is the straw phonation. Sing through a straw in water on a comfortable glide. Make small, steady bubbles. Big splashes usually mean too much air pressure. No bubbles can mean too little.

Step 4. Stop the throat muscles from taking over
The throat area includes muscles that lift, lower, stabilize, and shape the larynx. These muscles are not bad. They help with swallowing, speech, pitch, and expression. Trouble starts when they do the job of breath balance or vocal fold coordination.
Overusing throat muscles can feel like:
Squeezing around the Adam’s apple area
Pulling under the chin
Tightness along the sides of the neck
A raised larynx
A tone that feels trapped inside the throat
One common pattern is reaching for a high note by lifting the chin and tightening the neck. This shortens and stiffens the vocal tract. It may give a temporary feeling of control, but it often makes the note harder.
Try this instead:
Sing a comfortable “moo” on a descending slide.
Keep the volume medium-soft- mezzo piano
Let the head stay level. You can balance a book on your head
Place a hand lightly on the front of the neck.
Notice whether the muscles tighten each time
Repeat with less volume and a smaller slide.
The hand is only for awareness. Do not press on the larynx while singing.
Another useful sound is a lip trill. If lip trills are hard, use a tongue trill, “vv,” “zz,” or straw phonation. These semi-closed sounds help the voice find balance without a lot of throat effort.
Step 5. Keep the false vocal cords from constricting
False vocal fold constriction often feels like the throat is narrowing from above the sound. The tone may become rough, strangled, or overly dark. Some singers also feel pressure around the top of the larynx.
This can happen when a singer tries to be louder, more emotional, or more “powerful” by squeezing and tightening the sound. It can also happen when someone imitates grit or distortion without knowing how to control it.
To reduce unwanted false fold involvement, use sensations that encourage openness above the true folds.
Try a silent laugh:
Inhale quietly through a smile, as if beginning a gentle laugh.
Feel the throat widen without gasping.
Sigh on “hah” from a comfortable pitch downward.
Keep it easy and unforced.
Then try a surprised “uh-oh” on a soft speaking pitch. The goal is an easy onset, not a hard glottal attack. If the sound begins with a tight cough-like catch, you know you are doing it wrong.
A yawn/sigh can also help, but do not overdo the “yawn posture.” Too much artificial yawning can make the tongue press down and the sound dull. Use only the beginning of a yawn and then sigh to feel the throat widen.
Step 6. Use easier onsets to prevent tightening
The way a note starts often sets up the whole phrase. A hard onset slams the vocal folds together. A breathy onset leaks air and may cause the throat to tighten afterward. A balanced onset starts cleanly without a punch.
Practice three versions on “ah”:
Breathy onset
Add a clear “h,” like “hah.” Notice the air leak.
Hard onset
Start with a little catch, like a tiny grunt. Do this once only for awareness, not as a habit.
Balanced onset
Begin as if speaking “ah” gently to someone nearby.
The balanced onset should feel immediate but not forced. Once you find it, sing short patterns at moderate volume. If the jaw tightens at the start of each note, return to humming or “vv” for a minute.
Step 7. Match vowels to the pitch instead of forcing them
Jaw and throat tension often increase when singers carry a speech vowel too high in the chest register. For example, a wide “eh” or “ah” may work in a low range but feel shouted higher up. The singer then pushes more air, raises the chin, and locks the jaw. That is because there are intrinsic musicles that run the vocal folds. They are the Thyroarytenoid Muscles (TA)- the lengthening muscles and the Crocothryoid (CT)Musicles-the widening musicles which control the high pitches. These muscles act like an wide elastic band that can be pulled lenghtwise and width wise. The mixed voice uses both of these muscles and makes adjustments, called registers. You can sometime hear registers "break" when people don't know how to control the balance of those TA and CT muscles.
Vowel adjustment can reduce that fight.
As pitch rises:
“Ah” may need a hint of “uh”
“Eh” may need a hint of “ih” or “ay”
“Oh” may need to stay narrow rather than spread
“Ee” may need more inner space, not a wider mouth
This does not mean changing the word beyond recognition. It means shaping the vowel so the vocal tract accommodates the pitch. Use a mirror only to check for jaw locking. Do not judge the sound by how wide the mouth looks.
Step 8. Build a short routine for release and balance
A good warmup should make singing feel easier, not prove how much effort you can spend. Use this 10-minute routine before practice.
Breathe and release the jaw for 1 minute
Let the lips part. Massage the jaw hinge and cheeks.
Hum gently for 1 minute
Use an easy “mm” and feel vibration around the lips or face.
Use straw phonation for 2 minutes
Glide up and down with steady air. Keep bubbles small if using water.
Sing lip trills or “vv” for 2 minutes
Use simple five-note patterns. Stay medium-soft.
Open to vowels for 2 minutes
Move from “mm” to “mah,” or “vv” to “ah.” Keep the same ease.
Sing a short phrase for 2 minutes
Choose something simple. Stop if the jaw, tongue, or throat grabs.
What a balanced voice feels like
A balanced voice does not feel lazy. It feels alert without strain. The breath moves, the vocal folds respond, and the throat does not need to clamp down to manage the sound.
Look for these signs:
The jaw can move without locking.
The tongue does not pull back on vowels.
The neck stays relatively quiet.
The tone starts cleanly.
Loud singing does not feel like yelling.
Soft singing does not collapse into air.
High notes need focus, but not panic.
If tension returns, do not keep repeating the same phrase. Change the condition. Use a straw, hum, lower the key, reduce volume, or simplify the vowel. Then return to the phrase and keep the easier feeling. If you still feell tight you know you need help.
